Which film did you like better?

waiting to exhale, still...

i watched 'waiting to exhale' last night. i remember thinking that angela bassett was robbed by not getting an oscar nomination. i think i might have even been holding out hope for a best picture nod.

i was young.

angela, of course, acted her behind off. i admit, at certain points in the film, i expected her to bite the furniture and spit it out, like martin lawrence used to do when he played his mama on 'martin.'

the movie itself is not great. it might actually be the first tyler perry film. watching it last night, i saw no difference between 'why did i get married' and 'waiting to exhale.' i might actually say that 'why did i get married' was actually more subtle.

i was cringing through most of the dialogue. the film could be renamed 'platitudes.' white women and black men were shredded to pieces. in truth, three of the four main female characters get involved with married men. somehow though, they get painted as victims of financially strapped, drug addicted, cheating black men and loose white women.

angela and loretta devine made things a bit easier to swallow, because, well...they can act. as a matter of fact, loretta devine is the standout. she didn't set anything on fire, or sleep with a crackhead, but she made her character three dimensional. poor lela made whitney look like meryl streep.

it wasn't all bad. the soundtrack was great. there are some nice moments. the supporting cast was pretty good. i just wonder why this film ever felt empowering to anyone. i couldn't help but think of "the women" (the original) as i watched the film yesterday. "waiting..." in some ways, is a cross between that film and any one of douglas sirk's melodramas.

the true success of the film was that it opened the door for a few more films to be made about black people that didn't involve social services, hookers, cotton, sports etc. although...some of my favorite films do involve social services ("claudine"), hookers ("feast of all saints"), cotton ("once upon a time when we were colored") and sports ("hoop dreams").

totally random...

considering my previous posts about music needing a vacation, this may sound odd; but plies is my sh*t. i can't explain it. i usually say, don't judge me, but i really don't care if you do. i don't know, maybe this is my street fix since 'oz' and 'the wire' are off the air.

guess who's coming to dinner

last week, i watched a couple of flicks in preparation for a class i am teaching next semester. i'd seen all of them before, but it was a good refresher. one of the films was 'guess who's coming to dinner.'

i've seen this film a couple times, but the last time i watched it from the beginning was about fifteen years ago. it's amazing how different a film can feel when you watch it at another stage in your life.

we all know what the film is about; at least we think we do.

if you asked anyone who's seen the film, they'd tell you it's about a black man and his family going to dinner at his white fiance's home. for the most part, that is what the film is supposed to be about. watching it last week, though, i saw an entirely different conflict.

in the film sidney poitier shows up with his white fiance and then drops the bomb on her parents about their plan to get married. all of the reaction is in response to sidney being black. my reaction was to the fact that sidney had just met the woman ten days earlier and planned to fly her to switzerland the next week to get married.

i know, i know...

in the time that the film came out, sidney could have known the woman his whole life and it still would have been a problem that he was black. i get that, but that wasn't the plot. sidney had only know this woman for a couple of days and then has the audacity to expect her parents to bless the union. what kind of sh*t is that?

all of the dialogue is about race, but all i could think about was the nerve of the two of them showing up and expecting to get approval for marrying a stranger.

isabel sanford (love her) plays the white family's maid and of course, she is the MOST UPSET about the wedding. she's running around screaming "all hell's done broke loose." later on, she threatens sidney and warns him that he better not be up to something.

all the while, sidney is adamant that he receives the approval from the girl's family, or there will be no wedding. i couldn't help but wonder why his family's approval wasn't important.

there is one interesting reference to a black man being president and sidney says that he'd settle for secretary of state. as sidney says it, he doesn't mean it seriously. it's kind cool now that will have had both of those things.

watch the film if you haven't seen it in a while. if for nothing else, watch it to see weezie jefferson act a complete fool.

i'm not judging...

i just read a statistic that only 11 percent of federal district judges are black. interesting, i believe that 97% of tv judges are african-american.

i stumbled upon a show today called
'family court...with judge penny'. i didn't have my glasses on, so i was confused when the latina looking judge opened her mouth. i immediately put on my glasses and realized that judge penny might be black. she looks like lynn whitfield, but talks like aunt esther. i'm sure it will be a smash.

"frank's place" gets one season, judge penny will run for twenty years.

games...

so, i have totally missed this season of 'the game'. first of all, i didn't know it was on. i don't watch a lot of friday night tv. honestly, i wasn't necessarily looking for the show, but i would've tuned in if it was on in a time slot that wasn't meant to kill the show.
i caught a little bit of the two episodes that ran tonight. i think 'the game' is the firstever half-hour drama. i know it says it's a comedy, but in the first episode, tia, the chick from "sister, sister" confronts her man's ex, calling her a fraud and claiming that the baby she's carrying is by some other man.

then...tia goes home and her roommate is sleeping with a man she once dated. the roommate breaks down (in front of the man) about how she's lonely and she needed something to fill the void.

the next episode had robin givens, playing herself giving the most heartfelt monologue about how hard it is to be a black actress in hollywood. it was almost too real.

not exactly a barrel of laughs.

this show is like a fictional version of 'real housewives of atlanta.' they have a token white woman too. actually, 'housewives...' is funny.

what i dig about 'the game' is that it looks good. it doesn't have that cheap sitcom feel. they spend some time on the production. i also like that on some level, they are totally throwing that 'strong black woman' thing out of the window and allowing the characters to be flawed.

is anybody else watching this show still???? does the cw do marathons? i need to catch up. i am trying to understand how tia's character became such a cold, shallow, insecure skank.

bet honors

black entertainment television has just announced its honorees for the 2nd annual BET HONORS. magic johnson, judith jamison, james e. clyburn and b. smith are all fine nominees. mary j. blige is one of the honorees, as well. i'll even go with that; but tyler perry?

"We are thrilled to kick off this historic inauguration weekend with the return of THE BET HONORS, a truly inspirational event that pays tribute to extraordinary individuals in our community," said Debra L. Lee, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, BET Networks. "And it couldn't have worked out more perfectly that THE BET HONORS and the Inauguration are happening within days of each other, as President-elect Barack Obama epitomizes all that we had in mind when we first put this show together. I'm certain that this year's BET HONORS will be even more poignant and powerful than we could have ever imagined."

according to BET's own description of the event, i'm confused by tyler's inclusion. i'm a little annoyed that they are even trying to connect this hot mess to obama's inauguration. last year, tyra banks and alicia keys were awarded. ms. keys was described as an entertainment visionary. okay.

tyler is successful. tyler has talent (yeah, i said talent). tyler's work though, with few exceptions, is regressive.

if white people produced 'house of payne,' we would have burned down the studio lot. i never thought a show could make 'that's my mama' look like 'masterpiece theater.'

got me a cadillac...

so, despite my initial objections and refusals, i decided to see 'cadillac records.' considering my usual willingness to see any type of film, especially ones that employ and showcase brown faces in quality work; i couldn't quite put my finger on why i did not want to see this film.

i suddenly realized the reason watching a commercial for directv. beyonce was working up a sweat, urging us to upgrade out satellite tv service. i realized that just her presence in the film was enough to not make me want to see it.

i'm not alone.

it isn't that i don't like beyonce, she's worked hard, she's talented and all of that. i'm not knocking that. it's just that i can't watch you dancing in a commercial about cable service, then singing about videophones (watch how quickly that song becomes and ad...i'm sure it was written for that purpose) and then turn around and take you seriously portraying etta james.

i know that's not fair.

it wasn't until my boy randy put into perspective the cast of the film...mos def, jeffrey wright, adrien brody, eamonn walker etc., that i decided to take the chance.

it's good. and to be fair, beyonce does a fine job.

if you are like any of the other people i've spoken to about this film whose first words are, 'beyonce as etta james?'; trust me you'll enjoy the movie. if it's any incentive, beyonce isn't in the film much. it may come as a shock, but even as a producer, of the film it appears that she used restraint and did not turn this into vanity project.

jeffrey wright is the man.

he owns this film. he plays muddy waters. if the film had a different pedigree. say, if...clint eastwood had directed it. jeffrey would be getting nominated for his work.

columbus short can act. who knew? columbus plays little walter. it's always good to see people actually work with material that allows them to do something. i think he was the biggest surprise for me.

gabrielle (is she famous enough for a first name only?) is gabrielle. i don't care what she's in, she looks like she's about to go on a red carpet. i never understood, or agreed with the character actor (i.e. not lead actor attractive) thing, but she's almost too pretty for some things. i would've had her not wear any makeup and then shot her scenes at 4am after not getting sleep. either way, the dimples are always gonna be a problem.

overall, the film works. it's well acted and directed. it's worth your matinee bucks. i must admit that i sat there getting angry at the content. in short, it's about white folks getting over on black musicians and black musicians wanting cars instead of savings.

it's the story of chess records. i won't go into the details...go see the flick. i will say that the film illustrates what has been a continuous problem in terms of empowerment. the artists are not paid properly and are often given cadillacs as payment. it was a sort of musical sharecropper set-up. in some ways, i know that we've come a long way from that, but as a former brand manager, i've seen how easy it is to get a black artist to perform for almost nothing...and be happy about it.

as i sat in the film watching brody's character pay his artists with cadillacs, as opposed to giving them proper royalties; i couldn't help but think about a former client. i repped a tequila company. i won't say which one, but if you listen to hip-hop, you know who i am talking about.

i was sitting in a meeting, trying to decide the tv/film entertainment brand strategy for them. in tv/film placement, it takes cash and some promotions to grease the wheels and get the exposure you want. as i laid out my plans, which involved them spending money, the tequila executive laughed and said, 'i got millions of dollars of exposure from (artist) that we didn't ask for...we just sent him a case.'

he went on to tell me that for the price of a case of tequila, the artist will mention the tequila anywhere he wants. meanwhile, here we are sitting in a strategy meeting deciding on how and what to pay white artists and executives for the same type of endorsement.

the more things change...

cadillac records isn't a masterpiece. it's an enjoyable flick. i did have some issues with it. i have officially decided that voice-over is the devil. it weighs the film down. i also thought cedric the entertainer was miscast. i don't think he was supposed to be funny. i understand why he was cast though.

it's tough being a producer. you have this great subject matter, that deserves top notch treatment, but movies cost money (enter beyonce). the problem is that this is the type of film that would attract an audience that wouldn't respond to her being cast.

what do you do? do you spend five more years getting it made with a qualified broadway, turned film actress and hope it gets some traction at festivals? Or do you get the one of the biggest stars on the planet and cross your fingers that real film and music fans show up? i think they made the right choice.

i'd rather see this film with cedric and beyonce, than not have it onscreen at all.

    About Me

    My Photo
    Hampton06
I've worked as journalist, marketing executive, essayist, producer and flunkie. Former publications include Black Meetings & Tourism, Sister 2 Sister and most notably the National Enquirer. Yes, I went through trash, crashed weddings and on occasion, spotted UFO's. Deciding to not permanently damage any chance of having the career that I moved to Los Angeles for, I left the tabloid for creative pursuits. We all know that you can't eat off of dreams; "Fame costs." So, while writing and attending American Film Institute, I held various positions from the mundane - answering phones; to the ridiculous - being Sheryl Lee Ralph's personal assistant. I did the executive thing and ran an agency. It killed my creative spirit. I decided to change my life. I packed up, sold my my excess junk on craigslist and drove back east to spend time with my father who has been ailing and to just take a breath. Now, I am an English/Cinema studies professor. I'm getting to do something I love, at a place I love. Life is good. When I'm not working, writing and performing, I sleep.
