i dig ashanti. she's a fighter. it would have been easy to crawl in to a ball and fade way once beyonce commanded that no other young female r&b/hip-hop star be famous. instead, she keeps releasing songs, even when it seems that no one even notices...and she has nelly. not bad.

that said...two things bother me. one, i have never been okay with her receiving the soul train aretha franklin award for entertainer of the year back in 2002. those two names in the same sentence?

and number two...i know ashanti is no janet, but damn, couldn't they have done her a little better with the choreography in 'happy?' it looks like a grade-schooler made up the routine. you can almost see thought bubbles over her back-up dancers saying, 'i went to julliard for this?'

   I have always had a violently ill reaction to Ashanti in general and this video in particular. Its bad enough that she has this weird collection of quasi-talents that she's somehow made a career out of, but do I catch a hint of The Butterfly in this dance routine? Its like an unrealized dream.
