Featured Video: The PuNanny Diaries - Episode 8

Which film did you like better?

seasons change

i think christina aguilera is talented. i'm just a little sad, however, that no one told her it's not 2002. she's a superstar, so she still gets booked on major shows to perform. i've seen her on at least three shows singing her face off in space age costumes, to audiences who want her to sing 'genie in a bottle' and not her new music.

it's not her fault. she's young, but because of her early start, she's at that mid-life phase sooner than most (see: brandy and monica). that's isn't to say the music isn't good, but there's this weird point where the audience has moved on, and no one bothers to tell you.

you can recover from this. monica's doing a fine job of rebuilding and brandy has turned singing in the bathroom into a career booster.

the thing is, christina can sing. that's her strong suit. if i've learned nothing else from years of watching " it's showtime at the apollo," i know that audiences don't like fast music they've never heard before. they'll go with you on a slow song if you kill it, but a dance track that folks can't sing along to is the kiss of death.

two words for you ms. aguilera...slow jams.

can't too many of these pop chicks out here get with her voice. medleys are good too at this point of your career (see: tlc and salt-n-pepa). remind people about what was hot about you in the first place and sneek in your new song. and what ever you do, don't announce a north american arena tour.

i say all of this because i care. i'm a fan.

as i write this, i suppose this could also be applied to j.lo. all of it minus the great singing voice thing. she tried to hit us hard all over the tv with her ditty about louboutins and there was a collective, international shoulder shrug.

the reality is, there's just a point where you gotta start thinking more jazz fest, and less mtv video awards (see: toni braxton and en vouge).

speaking of toni...it's crazy how 'hands tied' is my jam, but i have no idea what she's saying. she has the most melodic and sexy mumble ever.

    About Me

    My Photo
    Hampton06
I've worked as journalist, marketing executive, essayist, producer and flunkie. Former publications include Black Meetings & Tourism, Sister 2 Sister and most notably the National Enquirer. Yes, I went through trash, crashed weddings and on occasion, spotted UFO's. Deciding to not permanently damage any chance of having the career that I moved to Los Angeles for, I left the tabloid for creative pursuits. We all know that you can't eat off of dreams; "Fame costs." So, while writing and attending American Film Institute, I held various positions from the mundane - answering phones; to the ridiculous - being Sheryl Lee Ralph's personal assistant. I did the executive thing and ran an agency. It killed my creative spirit. I decided to change my life. I packed up, sold my my excess junk on craigslist and drove back east to spend time with my father who has been ailing and to just take a breath. Now, I am an English/Cinema studies professor. I'm getting to do something I love, at a place I love. Life is good. When I'm not working, writing and performing, I sleep.
