I have been a similar fit of block too. Sometimes I just feel inundated with thought and mutable to a way of expressing it. I think I am in that phase of life too. I have been having these mild freakouts.

I blame facebook and other networking sites that allow me to see that some of my peers a year after we all had our degrees conferred upon us, some have Master's Degrees, some are earning a Ph.D, some are study the art that they were too afraid to in undergrad.

I don't know, it's just hard sometimes to see which way is the path that you would like to go down and which is the most feasible. Life has felt tough this past year. I just have to find a way to keep calm amid this "transitioning", if you will, to the next level.

I think I am on the fence about my sentiments with Mo'Nique's win for the category. Yes, the role she played was powerful but it nonetheless bothered me, no, it made me uncomfortable. That's what I think it was for a lot of people, to think that a mother treat her child in such a manner. And Mo'Nique played it with such conviction was what scared me most. But it was definitely Oscar-worthy. I'm not saying I agree wholly with people who believe that more deserving actors have entire careers that warrant the same sought after prize, but we can see where they're coming from. I like the way you put it.

We should start pushing the envelope for a new construction of the American family juxtaposed to the stale "standard" we've seen time and again. Let's just say Angela Bassett paved the way for Mo'Nique to claim the victory. I think that is progress.

I certainly don't feel very political in the morning when I wake up and look like Buckwheat, yet I struggle with being perceived and often feeling like my hair is a political statement.

Then I have days like yesterday. My hair was the way it always is, but I threw on my Angela Davis t-shirt. I got a couple of sideways looks, mainly from older black people on campus who may have taken issue with the fact that I was wearing a t-shirt and a pantsuit, as well as the fact that "my face" was emblazened on a shirt.

At some point in the day, it dawned on me: I'm wearing a t-shirt that features a political activist, and my hair looks just like hers. Is this who I am now? Pre-natural, I was just DaRelle who "musta had indian in her family" with long, relaxed hair. Now I'm Angela Davis part deux?
Most interesting were two comments--one from a student and one from my trainer. The student gave me a hug. (We hadn't seen each other in a while.) She then said, "I just love your hair. You inspired me to wear my hair natural, and I really like it like that." While on the hip adductor machine at the gym, the trainer said "I LOVE your t-shirt."

Somewhere between several small decisions--to grow out the relaxer, to throw on an Angela Davis t-shirt--and several genetic flukes--XX instead of XY, a very new-world hair texture--I ended up making the personal political. And, dammit, that's just fine by me. At least it was yesterday.

Hmmm. That so true. And I can't believe you even still went to see him. Had that been me, I don't know if I would have the heart to even show up after that. Me n my pops have never been that tight either. And, it's not just holidays that exaggerate that relationship. But I guess we're tryin to work it out, like you all are. Time is precious. And life is fragile. So I at leas try to make the most of it. Even when a lot of times, I'm just not feeling it.

I have always had a violently ill reaction to Ashanti in general and this video in particular. Its bad enough that she has this weird collection of quasi-talents that she's somehow made a career out of, but do I catch a hint of The Butterfly in this dance routine? Its like an unrealized dream.
